Well, we had a sad incident occur this past Saturday (10/22/2022). On our way to the RV park in Roswell, NM, we hit a detour due to street construction, but it wasn’t well signed. We got lost and wound up on some residential streets. One of the streets had a tree with some low hanging branches. As I drove past, I thought I had enough clearance, but unfortunately one of the branches hit the front awning of our RV and tore it off from the awning arms and where it attaches to the RV. Fortunately other than some scratches on the side of the RV, the damage was limited to the awning and awning arms.

I was able to remove the bent awning arms from the RV while we were on the side of the road so we could finish the drive to the RV park. As previously stated, fortunately the damage was limited to the awning and awning arms.
I contacted the company we purchased a plan from to fix incidents like this, but they said their coverage hasn’t kicked in yet as the 1 year warranty from the manufacturer has to be up first. I contacted Grand Design and they said this type of incident isn’t covered under warranty. I spoke with the parts deparment and they provided part numbers for everything I’ll need to replace the awning and provided a recommended RV shop near me to order them from. In this case the RV shop is 3 hours away. I called the shop and ordered the parts. The total cost was almost $2000!! Hopefully the parts will arrive before we leave the area on 11/5/2022. I also put a claim in with our insurance and am currently waiting to hear back as of the time of writing this blog post.
The RV life has it’s ups and downs, mostly ups. Unfortunately this is one of the down times, but we will recover! We’re thankful the damage wasn’t worse than it was and that we have the means to fix it. We still love the RV lifestyle!!
